Who Will Live in Woven City and What Will They Do? A Look at the First Year

2026.03.04

Woven City is a place where companies can conduct demonstration trials to invent the future fabric of life. This week's episode looks back on the year, which began with Chairman Akio Toyoda announcing the completion of Phase 1.

Yuta Tomikawa is in Woven City.

But this time, he’s not just there to conduct interviews. The thumbnail gives it away, but this January, he began a new life as a resident of the city.

It all began one year ago. In January 2025, Chairman Akio Toyoda announced the completion of Phase 1 of Woven City at CES 2025, the world’s premier technology trade show held in Las Vegas. Since then, several key events have taken place, including a completion ceremony, a resident recruitment information session, and the official launch.

This week’s Toyota Times News looks back on a year in Woven City, sharing the thoughts and feelings of the people involved along the way. It also provides an overview of the trials being conducted by the Inventors gathered in the living laboratory.

Three days before the official launch, 125 employees of Toyota Motor East Japan’s  Higashi-Fuji Plant, once located on the Woven City site, visited for a tour. Many participants expressed nostalgia for the past and optimism for the future being created in Woven City.

Although the demonstration trials have begun, many readers may still find it hard to imagine daily life in the city. Yuta Tomikawa will start reporting from the perspective of a resident, sharing both the benefits and the challenges of living in Woven City. Tune in to find out more!
